Medway Open Studios July 2026

This year my studio is open from Saturday 4th July for the first two weekends and during these two weeks until Wednesday 15th July. Come and see what is going on! I am open from 10am until 5pm daily except Monday and Thursday, with late opening until 7pm on Friday and Saturday.

I have a new studio extension to show you, this is a space where I can work on the table top but is also a store;  this means I have more painting space in my main studio, where you will find some of my work displayed on the wall as well as being able to see my work in progress!  Cards and prints as always. I shall have drinks and cake and you must see our lovely garden!

Medway Open Studios and Arts Festival 2026 is set for Saturday 4th to Sunday 19th of July, offering a free art trail with fascinating studios and arts venues, with many studios grouped together within walking distance and a prize draw for visitors who collect the signatures of studios they visit in the festival brochure.

Now in our 14th year, our open studios trail regularly attracts over 25 venues to visit, and work on show by over 200 artists.  Each year, visitors are welcomed to explore the hidden creative workspaces and studios across Medway. Along the trail, you can take part in art activities and events, view exhibitions, talk to the artists, purchase art and classes, and see firsthand the array of artistic talent and opportunities in this immensely creative area of Kent. In Rochester we are a group centred around King Edward Road and Roebuck Road, including painting, printmaking, jewellery, ceramics, photography, textiles, illustration and animation.

About Ann

Ann has lived in Rochester for nearly 40 years and has been painting for 20 years. She developed her reputation as a plein air painter who now works primarily from her Garden Studio.
Ann paints the land, sea and sky in oils on both large and small canvases. Her latest paintings are exciting and looser, focussing on the state of the tide and weathers at various times of day and year, inspired by painting on the beach, sketches, photos and just being there. When Ann is in the studio her memories play an important part in working up a painting; the palette knife takes over, carefully placing the colours juxtaposed with each other resulting in a more abstract form of the subject. Ann uses line, brush and palette knife often producing highly textural work. She is best known for her seascapes, but is now gaining recognition for her modern landscapes.
Ann has been painting on the Kent Coast for some years, standing on the pebbly beach watching the tide ebb and flow, the morning mist across the Swale, the light on the horizon, the clouds coming in from the west over London, and the light out to sea to the north and east. The low tide exposes sandbanks, pebbles, seafood for the gulls to seek. Her work is inspired by her experience standing in the seashore and the fields immersing herself in the environment, getting to know the landscape, the colours. Sketching and plein air painting are an essential part of her process.
Each year Ann visits St Ives, a seaside town her parents took her to in the 1950s and 60s when it was a thriving Artists Community which included among others Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Wilhelmina Barns Graham. These artists have left their legacy today and the St Ives Painting School and Penwith Art Society are at the heart of what leads Ann to keep returning and to strive for a more abstract approach to painting. The surrounding countryside and the north Cornwall landscape are central to Ann’s inspiration

Rochester Art Fair

During this year Ann has been exploring the use of Mixed Media and Abstract painting.  The initial results of this work are on display in this exhibition which shows the influence of her visit to the Loire Valley in the springtime.  Ann’s process includes going out sketching in the landscape, bringing back her work to collage into her sketchbook. This forms a source of inspiration for larger paintings.

Summer of Painting 2

I have spent two weeks in Cornwall this summer, one in St Ives in May and the second in Marazion in July; the weather was different the first being hot and sunny and the second cooler with a westerly breeze. Importantly I have done sketching and painting and lots of photos and inspiration for my summer of painting.

I have a plein air painting from the Island in St Ives and another painting from some sketches on the beach.

I am currently working on another beach painting, hoping to capture the light on the wet sand. My stay in Marazion led to some great views of the Tin Mines at Botallick and some sea views from Marazion with St Michael’s Mount and some rain clouds blowing in over the point to the west. I have become interested in the patterns in the rock formations and hope to produce a series which uses these patterns.
